Family Folk & Step Dance

TO REGISTER

This class will explore traditional dance forms with a mix of movement and listening activities to foster a deeper appreciation for them in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. A link to audio files for at-home practice will be shared with dancers.  Materials will be given to students to share what they learn with others outside of the class in hopes of fostering a revival of homespun music and dance across the North Country.

The class is geared toward the younger generation, and children are encouraged to invite their parents, grandparents or adult caregivers to register as well.
Students will learn the Ottawa Valley “basic reel”, and a variety of folk, contra, circle and square dances, including “podorythmie” - seated Quebec foot percussion.

After each class students may stay for the first 15 minutes of the North Country Folk Orchestra practices to try out their Ottawa Valley reel steps with live musicians.  At the end of the class, participants will be invited to perform a group dance to the music of the North Country Folk Orchestra.

No dance experience is necessary.  Bring clean, dry sneakers or closed-toe shoes.  Water bottle is suggested.
